Congratulatory Message from PM Lee Hsien Loong and ESM Goh Chok Tong to President of Myanmar U Thien Sein and Chairperson of the NLD Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong have written to President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thein Sein to congratulate him on Myanmar’s successful conduct of its landmark General Elections on 8 November 2015.  Prime Minister Lee and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh have also written to Chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to congratulate her on the NLD’s victory at the General Elections.

Dear President Thein Sein,

I write to congratulate you and the people of Myanmar on the successful conduct of your historic General Elections on 8 November 2015. 

This was made possible with the sincere efforts of all stakeholders, including the political parties, the Union Election Commission and the security institutions, to ensure that the General Elections were peaceful and orderly.  The successful General Elections showed Myanmar’s remarkable progress towards democracy since it embarked on the path of political and economic reforms under your leadership.

Singapore is a friend of Myanmar.  I understand that the stakeholders will be meeting soon to work together towards reconciliation as well as a peaceful and orderly transition to the new government.

The smooth General Elections were an important achievement for Myanmar.  They were made through the concerted effort of all stakeholders – the political parties, the Union Election Commission, the security institutions and the Myanmar people.  They showed how far Myanmar has come since it began its economic and democratic transition under your leadership. 

I am encouraged that the stakeholders have committed to working together towards national reconciliation and a peaceful and orderly transition to the new government.  As a close friend and fellow ASEAN member, Singapore wishes Myanmar well during this transition period and beyond.
