Statement from the Prime Minister's Office: Changes at the Public Service Commission

The President has appointed Professor Tan Ser Kiat as a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC) with effect from 21 February 2013, for a five-year term in the first instance.

Professor Tan, 67, obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Singapore and his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (Glasgow), United Kingdom. He was Group Chief Executive Officer of SingHealth from its inception in 2000 up till 2012.

Professor Tan continues to serve as a Board Member with SingHealth and holds concurrent appointments as Chairman of SingHealth Foundation and Emeritus Consultant of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital. He is also President of the Singapore Medical Council.

Beyond his professional appointments, Professor Tan is also active in contributing to the community. He has served on the Board of the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore as President since 1994, and subsequently as Advisor since 2003.

Professor Tan was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Gold), Public Service Medal and Meritorious Service Award for his contributions to the Public Service.

Besides Professor Tan's appointment, PSC will also be seeing two other changes. Dr Charles Toh, 82, will be retiring on 1 March 2013 after serving more than 20 years as a member of the PSC, including 2 years as Deputy Chairman. From 1 March 2013, PSC Member, Mr Kwa Chong Seng, 66, will assume the role of Deputy Chairman, alongside serving Deputy Chairman, Mr Tan Yam Pin, 72.
