Press Statement From PM Lee Hsien Loong on Mother Tongue Education

SM Lee Hsien Loong | 3 May 2010

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's remarks about the teaching of Mother Tongues in schools on 3 May 2010.

I know many Singaporeans, including pupils, parents, and teachers, are concerned about the government’s plans for the teaching of Mother Tongues in schools, and especially at PSLE.

Emphasis on Mother Tongues is a vital feature of our education system, and the Government is determined to progressively strengthen and update its teaching and examination.

We have noted public responses to Minister Ng Eng Hen’s recent comments on the Mother Tongue Review for PSLE, and are studying the issue. Minister Ng and I will meet the press soon to address the concerns raised, and set out the Government’s thinking.
