Statement for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong’s bilateral meetings in Tianjin and Beijing. DPM Wong was on an official visit to China from 6 to 8 December 2023.
Deputy Prime Minister Wong met and was hosted to dinner by Tianjin Party Secretary Chen Min’er in Tianjin yesterday. They reaffirmed the strong ties between Singapore and Tianjin as well as the significant progress made by the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City (TEC), which marked its 15th anniversary this year. Deputy Prime Minister Wong and Party Secretary Chen agreed that at the time of its inception, the TEC’s vision of being a model for sustainable development was ahead of its time, and that the project exemplified the future-oriented nature of the Singapore-China relationship. They also agreed that Singapore and Tianjin would jointly develop the TEC as an upgraded “National Green Development Demonstration Zone” in the next bound of cooperation on the TEC, and strengthen the TEC as a model of high-quality green growth for other cities in China and the region. Deputy Prime Minister Wong and Party Secretary Chen also discussed ways to further Singapore-Tianjin cooperation, including through new collaborations such as the establishment of a green and digital shipping corridor between Singapore and Tianjin, which is the first such corridor between Singapore and China.
Deputy Prime Minister Wong met PRC Finance Minister Lan Fo’an in Beijing this afternoon. Minister Lan shared with Deputy Prime Minister Wong about China’s economic and financial priorities. They discussed how the two countries’ Finance Ministries can step up their cooperation both bilaterally and at regional platforms such as ASEAN+3 and APEC.
