Mr Lawrence WONG
Mr Lawrence Wong is the Prime Minister and Minister for Finance. He is also a member of the GIC Board and chairs the GIC’s Investment Strategies Committee.
Mr Wong is the Secretary-General of the People’s Action Party. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2011, and has been re-elected twice, most recently as a Member of Parliament for the Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency.
Before becoming Prime Minister, he held Ministerial appointments in the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, the Ministry of National Development, and the Ministry of Education, and was also the Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He also co-chaired the Multi- Ministry Taskforce, which oversaw the Singapore Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As Deputy Prime Minister, he launched Forward Singapore, a nationwide exercise to engage Singaporeans widely, and to refresh and strengthen Singapore’s social compact. The exercise has provided a roadmap for Singapore’s next stage of development.
Prior to entering politics, Mr Wong was a civil servant. He started his career as an Economist, and held positions across various government ministries, including as Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority.
Mr Wong obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.
